CROSS COUNTRY DRESSCODE AND RULES

Like within any equestrian discipline there are rules, dress codes and a course.

How Cross Country and the judging works
Much like Show jumping the objective of Cross country is to clear a complete course of jumps in order, as fast as you can. However the jumps are made of solid natural materials and fixed in place, with the course set through fields.
You get fault points for the following reasons
Each jump knocked down or refusal gives you 4 faults, if you get 2 refusals you are disqualified. A fall of horse or rider also counts as a disqualification. If a horse touches the water on a water jump (when applicable) it is also counted as 4 faults. If you jump the course in the wrong order or have to circle in front of a jump to regain control then this counts as a refusal and will also give you 4 faults.

Dress code for the horse
The FEI defines the saddlery rules for Cross Country as follows:
"The type of saddlery is optional. -  Gags or “bitless bridles” are allowed as are unrestricted running martingales or Irish martingales.
- Reins must be attached to the bit(s)or directly to the bridle.
- The stirrup iron and stirrup leathers must hang free from the bar of the saddle and outside of the flap.
The following are forbidden: any form of blinkers, side, running or balancing reins; tongue straps and /or tying down the horse’s tongue; any other restrictions, any bit or other item of saddlery likely to wound a horse.
